Great Abyssinia sought and secured an international restaurant brand, Spur, to franchise its international restaurant brand to its subsidiary Kucchina P.L.C. The first of the chain will be Spur Steak Ranch which will be located on the new Abyssinia Plaza; with many more to come.
Manufacturing or Processing
Developing domestic productive capacity was an integral part of Great Abyssinian’s approach of horizontal expansion. The six product lines that currently operate under the umbrella of the Great Abyssinia P.L.C are all proudly Ethiopian; all manufactured and prepared domestically using Ethiopian resources and know-how. In fact, the Carbonated Soft Drink line, which goes to the market under a brand name Aby Splash, is the first CSD brand to be wholly owned and operated by Ethiopians. Also, the Bottled Water line was among the few pioneers in Ethiopia which introduced bottled water to the local market. The company’s focus on productive capacity was reflected early when it decided to invest on a state-of-the-art manufacturing facility. Apart from its processing facilities located in Sululta and Ferensay (A.A), currently Great Abyssinia has finalized another processing plant in Sandaffa which will exclusively cater for its CSD and Juice Drink Beverage product lines.
Fast moving consumer goods
From outset, the Great Abyssinia P.L.C strategic approach was slow and deliberate horizontal expansion. This strategy needs careful identification of the sectors for expansion. Informed with the opportunities of the speedy per capital income growth and an emerging middle class in Ethiopia, the Great Abyssinia selected the consumer goods market to make its mark. Apart from its seed business, Abyssinia Coffee, which focused on processing, exporting and enhancing the cupping experience in Ethiopian coffee, it carefully selected Carbonated Soft Drinks, Bottled Water, Juice Drink Beverages and Tissue paper lines for expansion. Today, the Great Abyssinia enjoys a large market share all of these consumer goods markets; and it is still striving to meet the largely unsatisfied potential market for consumer products.
Recent focus on export of most recognized Ethiopian coffees has pushed Abyssinia to be one of the major players in the green coffee export game in Ethiopia. Generally, Abyssinia exports and processes four coffee groups in large quantity: Commercial Washed, Commercial Unwashed, Specialty Washed and Specialty Unwashed. Specialty Coffee refers to the finest quality of coffee which is highly distinctive because of its full cup taste and little or no defect; it commands high market premium because of the quality. Abyssinia works only with the finest Ethiopian coffee both for export of green coffee beans and value-addition. The major types of coffee we offer for the export market Yirgacheffe, Sidama, Lmmu, Tepi and Bebeka, Jimma, Lekemt and Harar.
